Fungus gnats are managed most reliably by combining moisture correction, monitoring, and a larval treatment when one is warranted. Adult traps alone cannot reach larvae in potting mix, and a soil treatment will not correct the damp conditions that favor another generation.
Begin by confirming the pest. Then work through the plant collection systematically for at least one full life cycle instead of repeatedly applying household mixtures to whichever pot has visible flies.
Confirm that the flies are fungus gnats
Adult fungus gnats are small, delicate, dark flies with long legs and antennae. They are weak flyers and are often seen walking over potting mix, making short flights around plants, or collecting near windows. Their slender, mosquito-like shape distinguishes them from the more compact flies commonly associated with fermenting produce. Fuzzy, moth-like flies centered on a sink or drain suggest a different breeding source.
The larvae live in moist organic material. According to the University of California Integrated Pest Management program, they have pale or translucent bodies with a dark head and feed primarily on fungi, decaying matter, and fine roots. Adults do not bite people or substantially damage plants. High larval populations can injure roots, however, with seedlings, cuttings, and young plants at greater risk.
A raw potato piece can help confirm larvae: place a small slice cut-side down on the potting mix, then lift and inspect its underside after a few days. Colorado State University Extension recommends potato slices as a larval monitoring tool. Dispose of the slice after inspection; do not leave decomposing food in the pot.
Understand why the infestation persists
Adults lay eggs in moist potting media and other damp organic debris. The larvae feed there, pupate, and emerge as another wave of adults. Under typical indoor conditions, a generation can be completed in roughly three to four weeks, according to Colorado State University Extension. That overlap explains why killing the adults seen on one day rarely ends an infestation.
Persistently moist mix is the central condition to correct, but it may have several causes:
- Watering again before the plant has used enough of the previous application
- A pot without a working drainage hole or a liner standing in cachepot runoff
- An oversized container with more wet mix than the roots can occupy
- Old, decomposed, or fine-textured mix that holds too much water and has poor air space
- Lower light and cooler seasonal conditions that slow water use
- Fallen leaves or other decaying material on the soil surface
- An open bag of damp potting mix or another nearby breeding site
Do not assume every affected plant should become completely dry. Moisture requirements vary, and forcing a fern, seedling, or newly rooted cutting through severe drought can cause more harm than the gnats.
Choose the response from the evidence

Use a layered control plan
1. Isolate and map the problem
Move a newly acquired or clearly infested plant away from unaffected plants when practical. Place a dated yellow sticky card near the soil surface of each suspect pot and record catches by pot, not just by room. University of Minnesota Extension recommends isolating new plants for one to two weeks and using sticky traps to monitor flying insects.
Yellow cards catch adults and reveal where activity is concentrated. They reduce egg-laying adults, but they do not kill larvae in the mix. Replace a card when it becomes dusty, saturated with insects, or can no longer be counted. Keep cards out of reach of children and pets and away from hair, fur, and beneficial animals.
2. Make the root zone less favorable
For an established plant that tolerates a drying interval, allow the top 1 to 2 inches of mix to dry before watering again. This is the primary cultural control recommended by Colorado State University Extension. Judge depth in proportion to the pot: a tiny propagation cell cannot safely lose the same absolute depth of moisture as a large container.
Also:
- Empty saucers and cachepots after watering.
- Remove fallen leaves and decaying plant debris.
- Confirm that drainage outlets are open.
- Increase light only within the plant’s safe range; do not put a shade plant into harsh sun merely to dry its pot.
- Adjust watering to actual moisture rather than a recurring calendar reminder.
- Close and store unused potting mix in a dry location.
Bottom watering is not, by itself, a fungus-gnat treatment. Moisture can still wick to the surface, and a reservoir left full can keep the whole root zone wet. Use whichever watering method moistens the root ball appropriately and permits an adequate dry interval for that species.
3. Target larvae when monitoring supports it
Two biological options have strong Extension support:
Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (Bti). Bti is a microbial active ingredient used against certain fly larvae. UC IPM notes that repeated applications are often needed for fungus gnats. Use only a product whose label permits the intended indoor site and application method and identifies the target pest or otherwise legally covers that use. Product names and formulations are not interchangeable.
Steinernema feltiae beneficial nematodes. These microscopic organisms attack fungus gnat larvae in moist media. Both UC IPM and Colorado State identify S. feltiae as an effective biological control. They are living organisms: obtain them from a reputable supplier, observe storage and application instructions, and keep the treated medium within the label’s moisture and temperature directions. Drying the mix aggressively at the same time can undermine a nematode treatment.
These are alternative larval tools, not an invitation to combine every available product. Select one approach that fits the plant and follow its directions through the treatment interval. If the label does not include indoor ornamental plants or the intended use, choose another product or ask a local Extension office for current regional guidance.
4. Repot only when the medium is part of the problem
Routine repotting can spread insects and unnecessarily damage roots. Reserve it for mix that has broken down, stays saturated despite corrected watering, contains a very heavy population, or accompanies root decline.
Use a clean pot and fresh, packaged potting mix. Remove as much failed, waterlogged medium as can be removed without needless root damage; prune only roots that are clearly soft or dead with a clean tool. Bag discarded infested mix rather than adding it to an indoor storage bin. The University of Minnesota Extension recommends clean containers and new sterile potting soil when repotting for soil-borne pest problems.
Follow the trend for four weeks
Because adults and larvae overlap, continue monitoring after the first visible improvement.
- Day 0: Identify suspect pots, install dated sticky cards, inspect drainage, remove debris, and correct standing water.
- Days 3–7: Count adults by pot and check a potato slice where larval confirmation is needed. Begin one labeled larval treatment if evidence warrants it.
- Week 2: Compare catches with the first week, recheck actual soil moisture, and repeat a treatment only when its label directs.
- Weeks 3–4: Continue cards and cultural controls. Falling catches across consecutive checks show progress better than one gnat-free day.
- After week 4: If counts are flat or rising, look for an untreated pot, stored damp mix, an incorrect identification, or application conditions that did not match the product directions.
Keep the record simple: date, pot, number of adults, whether larvae were confirmed, soil condition, and action taken. This prevents overtreating a clean pot while missing the source.
Avoid unsupported or unsafe shortcuts
Hydrogen-peroxide drenches, vinegar, cinnamon, essential oils, thick sand or gravel barriers, and household-soap recipes are widely repeated online, but the Extension sources used for this guide do not recommend them as a primary fungus-gnat program. Concentration, plant sensitivity, and inconsistent performance make improvised drenches a poor substitute for moisture correction and a labeled treatment.
Do not fog a room or spray insecticide into the air at flying adults. UC IPM states that insecticides are rarely warranted for fungus gnats and specifically advises against spraying adults in flight. Broad surface sprays also miss larvae protected inside the potting mix.
If a pesticide is used, the label controls where, how, how much, and how often it may be applied. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that pesticide labels are legally enforceable directions. Follow all precautions, ventilation requirements, protective-equipment instructions, reentry times, and restrictions involving children and pets. “Natural” or biological does not mean label directions are optional.
When to get expert help
Contact a local Cooperative Extension office or qualified plant professional when a valuable specimen is declining rapidly, seedlings are being lost, roots are extensively damaged, or the infestation persists after a full, correctly monitored control cycle. Bring clear photos of the adult, larvae, sticky cards, pot, and root zone if requested; accurate identification prevents unnecessary pesticide use.
The durable solution is an integrated one: identify the fly, remove excess moisture and decay, monitor adults, target larvae only when needed, and verify a downward trend over the complete life cycle.
