About Asian American Daddy

Who I Am

Hi! I'm an Asian American dad navigating suburban life with my family, our plants, and our cats. This blog exists to share what I've learned (and continue to learn) about caring for the living things that make our house a home.

I grew up watching my parents tend to gardens and orchards, but I didn't inherit that green thumb naturally. Every plant I've kept alive has been a small victory. Every cat behavior I've decoded has been a revelation. I write about both - the wins and the failures - because real life isn't picture-perfect, and neither is plant parenting or pet ownership.

Why This Blog Exists

Too many blogs assume you already know what you're doing. They skip the basics, gatekeep knowledge, or pretend everything is effortless. That's not reality.

This blog is for:

  • Curious beginners who want to start growing plants or understand their cats
  • Busy parents juggling family life and trying to keep something green alive
  • Anyone who appreciates honest advice without the pretense

I write the guides I wish I had when I started - practical, accessible, and occasionally funny (dad jokes come free).

What You'll Find Here

This site focuses on two main topics:

Plants

Houseplant care, propagation tips, kitchen gardening, and troubleshooting guides. I lean into plants that connect to Asian cuisines - Thai basil, cilantro, bitter melon, green onions - because that's what I cook with and what I grew up eating.

Cats

Cat care, behavior, nutrition, enrichment, and product reviews. Whether you're dealing with a picky eater, a destructive scratcher, or just want to understand why your cat does that weird thing at 3 AM, I've got you covered.

My Approach

  • Accessibility first: No gatekeeping. I explain things simply and celebrate small wins.
  • Science-backed but conversational: Facts matter, but I skip unnecessary jargon.
  • Cultural perspective: I weave in the Asian American experience authentically when it's relevant.
  • Honest about failures: I share what went wrong as openly as what went right.
  • Real life, not Instagram perfection: Plants die. Cats knock things over. It's all part of the journey.
